What are the mounts of the palm
"Mounts" are areas of the palm that can be more raised or, conversely, flatter. In traditional systems the mounts are associated with symbolic "planets" (Jupiter, Saturn, Sun, Mercury, Venus, Moon, Mars) and corresponding themes — will, discipline, self-expression, communication, pleasure, intuition, drive and defensive reactions.
Important: the prominence of the areas depends on hand anatomy, muscle tone, use and age. Therefore it's more accurate to view mounts as part of the overall pattern: together with the fingers, palm shape and lines.
How mounts are read
Usually evaluated: (1) prominence (convex/flat), (2) texture (soft/firm), (3) the "cleanliness" of the area (webbing, fine lines, intersections), (4) balance between areas. In a reflective framing this can be understood as a combination of interests and ways of obtaining satisfaction.
- Strong prominence — the theme is more noticeable in behavior and motivation.
- Flatness — the theme may manifest more quietly or through other channels.
- Webbing/fine lines — overload, multitasking or internal tension in the area's theme.
Main mounts
Below is a neutral reference list. The formulations are given so they can be used as hypotheses, not as "labels forever".
Mount of Jupiter
Located at the base of the index finger. Traditionally associated with ambition, leadership, drive for growth, respect and influence. In colloquial terms — about the desire to "raise the bar" and take responsibility.
Mount of Saturn
At the base of the middle finger. Theme of discipline, steadiness, seriousness, the ability to keep distance and take the long path. In a neutral version — about patience, realism and internal rules.
Mount of the Sun (Apollo)
At the base of the ring finger. Theme of self-expression, taste, recognition, "making things beautiful" and receiving feedback. In conversation — about motivation by quality, aesthetics, creativity and enjoyment of the result.
Mount of Mercury
At the base of the little finger. Traditionally — communication, business acumen, learnability, resourcefulness. In careful framing — about speed of thought, skill at negotiating and switching between tasks.
Mount of Venus
A large area at the base of the thumb (inside the curve of the life line). Theme of vitality, pleasure, warmth, physicality and closeness. In reflective framing — about resources, the ability to feel joy, need for contact.
Mount of the Moon
Along the outer edge of the palm closer to the wrist (on the little finger side). Traditionally — imagination, intuition, impressionability, attraction to images and "inner worlds". In conversation — about empathy, dreaming and the need for meaning.
Mounts of Mars
Some schools distinguish two Marses: "lower" (closer to Venus) and "upper" (closer to the center/edge of the palm). In general sense this is about drive, defensive reactions, resilience in conflict and the ability to defend boundaries.
- Defensive Mars — endurance, self-control, ability not to "explode".
- Active Mars — courage, directness, readiness to engage in confrontation.
Balance and combinations
Mounts are not read in isolation: combinations are important. For example, a pronounced Jupiter + Saturn can give a balance of ambition and discipline, and Sun + Mercury — self-expression through communication. In a reflective framing it is useful to turn this into questions: where do you get pleasure, how do you set goals, how do you protect your boundaries.
Questions for reflection
- What motivates you more: growth and influence, stability, recognition, freedom, contact?
- How do you restore your resources: through people, through silence, through action, through creativity?
- Where do you most often "overload": in responsibility, in communication, in emotions?
- How do you defend boundaries: gently, firmly, through rules or by withdrawing?
Criticisms and caveats
The prominence of palm areas depends on anatomy and hand usage. The symbolic meanings of the mounts do not have reliable scientific validation and vary by school. Therefore mounts should not be used as a "diagnosis" or as a way to draw categorical conclusions about a person.
In a careful modern framing, mounts are a useful map of themes for conversations about motivation and habits, if you rely on context and test hypotheses with questions.
